Calvin's Year 1 school picture (aka 1st grade).
Age 5 1/2
Calvin's class photo (just a wee bit blurry). We were out of town with Mimi and Papaw when they took the actual group photo but we were able to have his picture made earlier. They then photoshopped him in which is why he looks all alone. :)
Caroline in her element...surrounded by kids! She was a ham that morning and she loves to act like a "big" kid and get in line with them for jump jam.
Well, she starts off in the line but gets so excited and takes off for the hall (where jj is held on Mon, Tues and Fri mornings).
Jump Jam! It's a great program the school does to add fitness to their agenda. 3 times a week they line up and go to the hall to "dance" to 3 or 4 fast-paced, fun songs that have been choreographed to music. Since his class has been doing jj for 3 terms now, they have the moves down pat. Even the teachers participate as great role models. Also, they are really into low rubbish (using containers to hold foods instead of using plastic bags, etc...) and healthy foods for the children's morning tea and lunch. They discourage lollies (sweets or candy), chips and other non-healthy food items. It's a wonderful way of life! The kindy is like that as well. A typical lunch I'll pack for them consists of: ham/cheese sammie on whole grain bread, fresh fruit in a tupperware container, fruit bar, some sort of crackers or pretzels, applesauce and water to drink. Cokes and juice boxes are a rarity! This is why when you look at the kids in the school, you rarely see an overweight child.
We definitely have formed new ways of eating and exercise! Tele (tv) is minimal, playstation/Xbox - "what's that?" and bikes & scooters are a necessity. Not to say we don't indulge in lollies (sweets), chips (french fries) or chippies (chips) but when we do, it's more of a treat than a side item. We've really have enjoyed a healthier lifestyle here on the island :) and one that we will bring home with us to incorporate into our lives in America.
