After our little picnic lunch we had a bit more of a drive. We drove through quaint little towns with their main streets lined with mom & pop stores, a few American fast-food chains and some amazing scenery. Before we hit the outer area of the lake, we went through the desert, part of the Tongariro National Park (more on that later). It was absolutely beautiful driving through the country of the North Island to only "bump" into this magnificent sight.
Caroline enjoyed riding with the girls and kept us entertained.
Mt Ruapehu is the highest point in the North Island and, like Tongariro, its history began before the last ice age.
