We arrived in Picton, the South Island's most northern port town, about half past 11 and a beautiful, sunny day welcomed us. What a cute little town with lots to see but we were in a hurry to catch the 1pm train so we didn't get to tour.
We de-boarded easily and gathered our bags (they have a baggage claim just like the airport! I had no idea!) then headed off to find the train station. Here we caught the train that runs once a day from Picton all the way down to Christchurch. We jumped off in Kaikoura, about half-way down the eastern coast of the south island, to stay the night and take in a whale-watching tour.
The path from the port to the train station is clearly marked with these cute yellow trains. It was so easy to get from point A to point B.
MaeMae took to Wolfgang and Missy like a fish does to water. It was really sweet how much fun she had with them. All 3 loved their time with them.
Edwin Fox Maritime Museum is home to the world's 9th oldest ship and sits on the banks of the Picton Harbour. She was built in India in 1853 and after 44 years of service she was towed to "Picton arriving 12th January, 1897 where she has remained ever since initially as a freezer ship, later as a coal hulk and now preserved under cover as a prominent tourist attraction. She had "round the world adventures a checkered history from troop carrier to immigrant ship, even convict transporter". We didn't get a chance to take the tour but we did see her displayed in an open exhibit. Really cool!
